Chapter 9! :-)
After class that evening, one of the guys who wasn’t afraid of me approached me. Within my first week of studying abroad, word got around my classes that I was the Hanson brother who had sex with my younger brother. I think that about 70 percent of the students decided I was weird and fucked up, and stayed far, far away from me. The remaining 30 percent either communicated with me on civil terms or actually tried to befriend me. Usually the only people trying to be friends with me as girls, but there were a few guys who actually accepted me. Not surprisingly, most of those guys were gay.
“Hey Taylor,” Carter, an outrageously flamboyant British boy, grabbed my shoulder as we filtered out of the classroom. “What are you doing tonight?”
“I… I don’t know,” I said automatically, finding it difficult to explain that I was moments away from calling Zac. Carter knew my story, I’m sure.
“A bunch of us are going out to dinner. Want to come?”
I couldn’t tell if he genuinely wanted to hang out with me, or if he was just trying to be nice because he felt bad for me. Either way, it felt good to have someone inviting me somewhere. I knew Zachary wouldn’t want to spend the evening with a group of College students who he would undoubtedly insult and offend. That’s just how he was.
“Sure,” I said because my need to be accepted suddenly felt much stronger than my need to please Zac. I figured he could spend one hour with a few of my fellow students and then we could spend the rest of the night together. It wouldn’t kill him. “Where… when…?”
“Well, I think we’re going to all go back to our dorms and clean up for a bit… how about you meet us at River View in about an hour?”
I knew River View to the Chinese restaurant down the street that a lot of students ate at.
“Sounds good!” I told him. “I’ll see you there.”
I realized as he was walking away that I should probably ask if I could bring Zac.
Zac would feel even more awkward if they weren’t expecting him.
“Wait!” I called after him. “Can I bring my brother?”
I could tell by his expression that he was looking at the photographs in his mind- letting my question hit him and trying to digest the stories he knew about me. I almost wished I hadn’t said yes at all.
“He’s… Zachary's visiting from the States…” I said quietly, my heart beat picking up with Carter didn’t reply right away.
Finally, he gave a weak smile. “Sure. Of course he’s welcome. See both of you there!”
I was just calming myself down from my conversation with Carter when I realized I hadn’t even gotten through the hardest part yet- Zac. Okay, understand this: Zachary doesn’t like talking to people he doesn’t know. He doesn’t trust anyone. In fact, his circle of trust basically consists of me, his best friend from home, Cheyenne, and my mother. He trusts the rest of my family, for the most part, but not completely. He hardly even trusts his few other friends. Zachary’s philosophy is that everyone is going to fuck him over, so he might as well fuck them over first. It’s useless to argue with him that he doesn’t need to be that pessimistic about life, because as soon as you convince him otherwise, some jack ass comes along and calls him a fag to his face- sending all of your efforts spiraling backwards.
Slowly, tentatively, I dialed.
“Hey,” he said warmly when he answered the phone, obviously having seen my name on his caller ID before he picked up.
“Hey yourself…” I tried to sound calm but really I was nervous about what he might say. “You want to meet me for dinner at 7?”
He paused. “In an hour? I guess that’s okay.” I couldn’t help but notice he sounded a bit disappointed. “Where?”
I explained to him where the restaurant was and what the sign outside of it looked like so he wouldn’t get lost, but knowing my brother, he probably knew his way all around London already.
I wouldn’t put it past him. He’s good at figuring out stuff like that- far better than me. I was stalling having to tell him that we wouldn’t be eating alone like he assumed.
‘Alright cool,” he said when I explained where the restaurant was and he even paused to get a pen to write it down. “Then we’ll go out together? You’ll introduce me to London’s finest night-life?”
“Oh yeah,” I laughed. It was part of my concept… teaching my younger brother something rather than him teaching me. I wasn’t sure if I was comfortable with it, in fact. I'm not really good at bossing people around.
“Alright, I’ll see you there in an hour or so,” he said into the phone, and I cold tell by his tone that he was seconds away from hanging up. He might have already had his finger on the “END” button in fact.
“Yeah…” I said, knowing that I couldn’t stall much longer but trying to figure out how to tell him about my so called ‘friends’.
“Sounds good. See you th-”
“Wait!” I cried into the phone. “I figured you might want to know… we’re meeting some people there too.”
He was silent for a moment. Zac is rarely silent, so it scared me. It couldn’t be a good sign, that was for sure.
“What?” was all he said when he eventually did speak.
“We’re meeting… some…,” I sighed. “This guy came up to me after class and asked if I wanted to join him and some friends for dinner. Zac, people hardly ever ask me to do stuff here… so I said yes. I asked him it was okay if you came, and he said it was perfectly fine. I’m sorry… I just… we can spend the rest of the night together.”
“Taylor…” he groaned into the phone. “I’ve been waiting all day just to have dinner with you. I don’t want to have to socialize with your stupid College friends who I don’t know.” We didn’t say anything for a second. I assume he must have realized he sounded really selfish when he said that, because a moment later he added, “I’m sorry but… I just wanted to spend time with you.”
“I know… and I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said yes, but I wasn’t thinking. I guess I could cancel…?” I said, because hearing Zachary say how much he wanted to see me made me melt and I just wanted to see him too. Forget socializing. I didn’t need social acceptance when I had Zac, did I?
“Don’t cancel,” he sighed. “Just… go on your own and meet me afterwards or something.”
“Zac...”
“What! I don’t want to come and I don’t want you to cancel, so I’ll grab some fast food or something on my own and meet up with you after.”
“It’s your second night here,” I sighed. “Your first full day here. I’m not going to let you do that.”
I made it sound like I was saying that because I cared about him, and that was partly why. I didn’t want him to have to spend the evening eating by himself. But even more than that, I didn’t want to be without him. Seeing Zachary the night before gave me a taste of how good it could be with him… how good it used to be. I was craving seeing him again. My long school day had been far too much time away from him.
“I don’t know what to tell you then, dude…”
“Come with me. Zac, please. Please come with me. It won’t be awkward… and if it is, we’ll leave.”
“You know I’ll just piss people off,” he grumbled.
“Well if you piss people off then you piss people off! I know how you are. I wouldn’t ask you to come if I really didn’t want you to.”
He paused for a long time and I grinned, because I knew he was about to say yes. Zac will do virtually anything for me. It’s strange. Someone else could ask the simplest request of him and he’ll bitch and whine about it. But me? He would drop everything for me and I took full advantage of it.
Of course, he did the same to me so I couldn’t feel too guilty about it.
“Fine,” he finally said grudgingly. “But I’m not going to like it and you’re going to have to make up for it by buying drinks tonight, I hope you know Baby.”
I immediately felt stupid for hearing it and I blushed a deep crimson. Fuck, did he just say that? That was even more flirtatious than anything else Zac has ever said to me before! He had called me baby. Baby!
I cringed.
“You... you just want to get me drunk so you can take advantage of my body,” I giggled. “I know your scheming ways.”
He laughed merrily into the phone, it was'n the right time to told him he was stepping over the line with his flirting. At least he didn’t seem in too bad of a mood, I sighed to myself when I hung up the phone. Perhaps the night wouldn’t be that bad after all.
